I’ve realized today that I’ve definitely got a problem with focus! Before I maximize the profitability of one campaign I’m off building another one. With good reason of course…today I was working on one of my new campaigns and whilst I was conducting keyword research I noticed that a super competitive niche that I had given up on sometime ago was void of competition. Where did everyone go? A couple of months ago I dropped out of that niche because there were just too many advertisers paying ceiling high bid prices to be on the first page of Google. 40 competitors gone poof….with only 4 remaining…thanks to the recent Google slap I’ll bet!
I thought to myself..this is time to get in…to build up my site and get that great quality score before everyone bounces back in full force. Theres never been a better time to start building up those quality content landing pages. I truly believe that the people who are making big money on Adwords are the ones who put in a lot of effort in not only testing and tweaking their campaign but also building highly relevant quality content landing pages. All that effort will truly pay off in the end!

Yikes…woke up this morning to find my sales the lowest it has ever been in two months. Logged in to my Adwords account and everything seemed ok there. Pretty much average number of clicks. What was going on? Logged on to my Clickbank account….ahaa…no sales from Yahoo today!
Logged on to my Yahoo Search Marketing account and lo and behold - Yahoo Search Marketing will be under maintenance from the 6th - 7th March for a system upgrade. As 20% of my revenue comes from YSM guess today I’ll just have to be satisfied with 20% less. Dang!!!!

Since the recent Google Slap 3 in February this year I’ve noticed that minimum bid prices for new campaigns (i.e new domains) have increased. I would guess pretty much that this is due to the new algorithm where Google needs to gather sufficient data for its quality score before lowering the minimum bid. Direct linking just does not seem to work for me at all. I get huge min bid prices that seem to just keep on getting higher and higher. For example, I did a direct link just to test out the this new Clickbank product, my minimum bid started off at 0.20 and as time passed it just kept on increasing. My quality score was rated at OK but yet the min bid prices kept on hiking up to the point where I just couldn’t keep the campaign profitable.
Compare that scenario with my other new campaign in which I purchased a new domain & created a landing page right from the start. Reason I did that was because minimum bid prices for direct linking was something ridiculous like $5. With the optimized landing page I had a fairly high minimum bid at first (~0.30) but after I hit 100 clicks and a great CTR of ~10% my minimum bid prices dropped drastically to 0.06.

A couple of days ago I purchased an ebook called The Amazonian King. Its all about how the author made his millions using Google Adwords and Amazons affiliate program. Its a good book and really inspired me to try out the Amazon affiliate program. I did try promoting Amazon products about a year ago when I first started with affiliate marketing and actually made some sales. The mistake that I made (I figured this out from the book) that the Amazon products I was promoting were too cheap. Heck I was promoting DVD box sets at a 4% commission…that would earn me a measely $4 per sale. Its a no wonder I lost money!

Before I actually start creating my campaign on adwords I first prepare my list of keywords. Although I’ve purchased a couple of keyword research tools over the past year I find myself consistently using just the free keywords tools. I only use Good Keywords and the Google Keyword Tool to conduct my keyword research. I start off with the root keyword to get an idea of all the keywords that are searched for. Using my earlier Tattoo example, I would first key in the root keyword tattoo and then drill down into the list of keywords that come up e.g tattoo designs, tattoo flash. I do not use the root keyword at all in my campaigns. Root keywords are far to generic and simply not targetted enough. You’d have a lot of trouble trying to convert root keyword traffic.
I will go through the list of keywords and pick out common keyword groups. Each common keyword group would then be placed in a separate ad group. Each of my common keyword groups do not have less than 2 keywords in common. E.g tattoo designs online, tattoo art designs, tattoo design pictures…in this group the common keyword is tattoo designs.
