Yesterday I kicked off a new campaign. Thought I’d keep a journal of my step by step blueprint starting with product testing all the way to maximizing profitability. Here goes…
Not sure if any of you who are promoting music & movie download sites have experienced getting their ads disabled due to copyright infringement in which Google seems to be clamping down on ads for P2P download movies/music websites. I’ve had a couple of my ads over the past few days disabled and have decided pretty much to start promoting less riskier products.
Product Research
#1 Min Earned Per Sale
Now what product should I promote? I am currently only promoting Clickbank products so the first thing I did was head to the Clickbank marketplace. I then casually browsed each category looking out for products that met my criteria of > $15 earned per sale. From experience I know that certain products such as dog training, make money & anti spyware products are super competitive on adwords. Do a quick search on Google and you’ll find over 40 advertisers. I prefer to scout out the less competitive markets even though I know for a fact that if theres competition then theres money to be made. I’ve tried competing it these markets and I burnt a lot of cash testing and tweaking before i could make any profit. I just don’t have that kind of upfront cash to burn…
#2 Good Sales Copy
Back to my product research. Once I’ve made a list of say 20 products I then go through each of the sales copies. I filter out all sites that have squeeze pages (where the site collects your email address before directing you to the sales copy) as well as any badly designed sites. Badly designed sites to me are just sites that if I were to put myself in the buyers shoes, don’t capture my interest whatsoever! Good sales copies usually have a good attention grabbing headline, nice banner and product graphics and customer testimonials.
#3 Assessing Product Demand Via Targeted Keywords
After reviewing the sales copies and filtering out the ones that don’t meet my criteria I’m left with only a handful of products on my list. The next step is to determine if there’s enough demand for these products. I want to start off by making at least one sale a day and there’s really no point in promoting a product that has only gets a few searches per day. To determine demand I fire up my keyword tools (Good Keywords & Google Keyword Tool) and key in a few targeted keywords to assess demand.
Its very important to remember to focus on targeted keywords and not get carried away. For example if I’m promoting a tattoo design membership product, I would search for the following targeted keywords : tattoo designs online, download tattoo designs, tattoo flash online, dragon tattoo designs online etc. The keyword tattoo designs although has thousands searches a day is in my not opinion targeted enough. Two word keywords are rarely ever targeted enough. If these keywords are able to bring me at least 100 clicks per day then I move on to the next phase - determining adwords competition.
#4 Adwords Competition
As I advertise mostly on Google Adwords the last step in my product research phase is to determine my Adwords competition. There are two ways of doing this. The fast automated way or the slow manual one. I use a keyword tool called Adword Analyzer that shows me the number of Adwords & Yahoo advertisers for a given keyword.

This job is really quick if you have a research tool to do it for you. If you don’t then you’ve got to manually do search for each keyword on Google and count the number of advertisers displayed on the search results page. If you’re not located in the US then it gets even more tedious. You’ve then got to append &gl=us to the end of the Google search results URL to view the number of advertisers on the Google US site. If you don’t you’ll only view the number of advertisers on your country location site.
My criteria for adwords competition is below 15+ advertisers on most of the keywords. The less the better. I then cut out all the products that have too much competition and list down only the ones that meet my criteria. Often you’ll find that none of the products from your initial list remain after the 4 step research process. If thats the case then start over again at the marketplace and pick out more products. I managed to find a product that survived my 4 step process. I will now create a Adwords campaign to test this product. Come back tomorrow and you’ll find the next step in my next post.
