How Good Is Under Cover Profits Really? Case Study Part 1

Adwords, Adwords Case Studies No Comments »

Guess what? I decided to take the plunge and subscribe to Under Cover Profits. I had decided to sign up a few days ago and to my dismay the membership was closed. I then signed up to the waiting list and within two days I got an email saying there were 19 spots left. I grabbed a spot this morning and have been really excited. Spent my whole morning plonking in keywords to monitor for profitable campaigns. You also get a bunch of free pre-monitored campaigns that you can use. I immediately started a new direct linking campaign using the pre-monitored data. I’ve already got a bunch of clicks in a few hours at insane CTR’s of above 10%. Only thing left remaining is the sales. Will let you know how that goes.

Back to what Under Cover Profits is really all about…UCP is essentially an Adwords ad monitoring tool. Its web based so no installation or hosting required. Good and bad I guess. Good because it does save you the hassle of having to install it yourself especially for non-techies and bad because I’m assuming that the admin has access to all this data. Oh well…I believe in the theory of abundance so I won’t worry too much about that. Anyway…

Adwords Site Targeting Results - Part 1

In my last post on how to get clicks for as low as $0.01 I mentioned that I put up a site targeted campaign on Google Adwords. It took some time to get the ad approved and active (~ 24 hours) and now some stats are in. I initially set my CPM as $2 and here’s a screenshot of my results :-

Adwords site targeted campaign

I’ve got a CTR of 1.99% (which is not very good) and paying 0.41 per click (which is also not very good). I’ve definitely got to do some tweaking.I’ve also paused one of the sites as the CPM cost is $5.39 which is just way too high. I don’t quite understand the difference between impressions and CPM though. I thought they were the same thing. I must contact the author of the Adwords180 ebook and find out more

I’m sure with a little tweaking I can get my CTR up and my CPC low. For now I’ve reduced my CPM from $2 to $0.30 which is the minimum just to see what effect it’ll have on my CPC. I’ve also included a separate Clickbank tracking ID for site targeted ads so I can measure the profitability. We’ll have to wait and see if I can achieve that $0.01 CPC. Will keep ya posted!

Adwords Campaign Case Study - #2 Keyword Research

Keyword ResearchBefore I actually start creating my campaign on adwords I first prepare my list of keywords. Although I’ve purchased a couple of keyword research tools over the past year I find myself consistently using just the free keywords tools. I only use Good Keywords and the Google Keyword Tool to conduct my keyword research. I start off with the root keyword to get an idea of all the keywords that are searched for. Using my earlier Tattoo example, I would first key in the root keyword tattoo and then drill down into the list of keywords that come up e.g tattoo designs, tattoo flash. I do not use the root keyword at all in my campaigns. Root keywords are far to generic and simply not targetted enough. You’d have a lot of trouble trying to convert root keyword traffic.

I will go through the list of keywords and pick out common keyword groups. Each common keyword group would then be placed in a separate ad group. Each of my common keyword groups do not have less than 2 keywords in common. E.g tattoo designs online, tattoo art designs, tattoo design pictures…in this group the common keyword is tattoo designs.

Adwords Campaign Case Study - #1 Product Research

Yesterday I kicked off a new campaign. Thought I’d keep a journal of my step by step blueprint starting with product testing all the way to maximizing profitability. Here goes…

Not sure if any of you who are promoting music & movie download sites have experienced getting their ads disabled due to copyright infringement in which Google seems to be clamping down on ads for P2P download movies/music websites. I’ve had a couple of my ads over the past few days disabled and have decided pretty much to start promoting less riskier products.

Product Research

#1 Min Earned Per Sale
Now what product should I promote? I am currently only promoting Clickbank products so the first thing I did was head to the Clickbank marketplace. I then casually browsed each category looking out for products that met my criteria of > $15 earned per sale. From experience I know that certain products such as dog training, make money & anti spyware products are super competitive on adwords. Do a quick search on Google and you’ll find over 40 advertisers. I prefer to scout out the less competitive markets even though I know for a fact that if theres competition then theres money to be made. I’ve tried competing it these markets and I burnt a lot of cash testing and tweaking before i could make any profit. I just don’t have that kind of upfront cash to burn…
